Nowadays the fruits and vegetables are grown with the help of pesticides and chemicals for fast growth. The fruits and vegetables look beautiful when seen but the quality goes down because of the pesticide, so some people avoid the peels of the fruits and vegetables but the nutrition peels are present in very high amounts. In this article we will know about the nutritional value of the peels and after knowing about the nutritional value people will not avoid the peel and intake the peel surely.

Fruits and vegetables both are the nutritional source of nutrients that provide several nutrients in a rich amount. Antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, Fibers are present in very large amounts in the peels of fruit and vegetables. Before consuming peels you should make sure about some points that they are edible or not, every peel is not edible, also wash the peels before consuming because nowadays fruits and vegetables have the properties of pesticides and harmful chemicals.

Nutritional Benefits of Eating Peel

There are lots of nutritional value of peels of fruits and vegetables and such of them are mentioned below : 

  • Rich in Fibre: Peels of fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber that helps to improve your digestive health, and helps you to support the blood sugar level. 
  • Full of Antioxidants: Peels also contain the properties of antioxidants that help to protect you from any kind of inflammation and cell damage. 
  • Rich in Vitamins and Minerals: Peels also contain a rich amount of essential vitamins and minerals that provides you with the sufficient requirement of vitamins and minerals. 
  • Phytochemicals: There is the availability of the phytochemicals (polyphenols) that contain the properties like anti inflammatory and anti cancer. 
  • Antibacterial Substance: Peels are a rich source of antibacterial properties that protects you from any kind of disease. 

Edible Peel of Specific Fruit and Vegetable

Not every food’s peel is edible, there are lots of edible peels and some of them are not edible. Here are some edible peel of specific fruit and vegetable such as mentioned below: 

  • Banana Peel: Banana peels are used in many recipes and a good source of fibre, helps in digestion. 
  • Potato Peel: Potato peels contain several minerals and vitamins including iron and potassium, vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Calcium and more. 
  • Apple Peel: Apple peels are rich in Vitamin A and C, also apple peels contain insoluble fiber. 
  • Cucumber peel: Cucumber peels are a rich source of Vitamin K, good for skin, antioxidants, potassium, and fiber. 
  • Carrot peel: Carrot peels are rich in nutrients such as phytonutrients that are more concentrated towards good skin, also rich in providing Vitamin A. 
  • Watermelon Rinds: Watermelon Rinds in several recipesa and also used as making pickles. 
  • Citrus fruit peel: Citrus fruit peels are rich in Vitamin C. Citrus fruits like lemon, orange, kiwi are a good source of making tea and Vitamin C. 

Tips and Precaution before Consuming Peels

Here are some tips and precautions are mentioned that are good before consuming the food, such are mentioned below : 

  • Wash with Water and Baking Soda: There are lots of pesticides and harmful chemicals mixed up with the fruits. so to clean them, wash them properly with water and baking soda. 
  • Scrub with a Brush: At the time of wash scrub them with a brush to clean the dirt and harmful chemicals. 
  • Check for Blemishes: Before buying any food, should check that there is any cut in the fruit or vegetable. So avoid that. 
  • Dry after washing: After washing the food, clean it with a clean cloth. 

Conclusion 

In conclusion, In a study it is proved that the edible peels of fruits and vegetables are the good source of several nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and more are the nutrients that are present in the edible peels. People can eat the peel in several forms such as direct consumption, cook it, add to soups and also add lemon and orange peel into the tea. Before consuming the peel people should take precautions such as proper washing with water and soda, and eat edible peels in the right form. Not every peel is edible. Before throwing the peel you should think twice about them.
